10th anniv platinum sets

so lets evaluat the US mint 1oth anniv platinum sets. the question is will they command a premium over the issue price and platinum spot and if they do will it be anything like the glorious 10 and 20th anniv silver eagle sets?

Quote:

Coin collectors have been awaiting for the expected announcement and its here.
Its the 10th anniversary for the American Eagle Platinum coins and to celebrate, the U.S. Mint has changed it up with a limited edition, two-coin set thats just for collectors.
Included in the set is one proof coin and, for the first time ever, one enhanced reverse proof platinum coin. Each contains one-half ounce of .9995 platinum.
Get your money ready, because the sets go on sale through the U.S. Mint website beginning December 13, 2007, at 12 noon (ET).
Pricing and product details for the platinum anniversary set

Before you get too excited, realize were talking about coins with platinum - that non too cheap metal. Otherwise, the price of this special set may take you for a bit of a spin. Hold on

Ready? The 10th Anniversary Eagle Platinum set is priced at $1949.95. With that, youll receive:
  • 1/2 ounce, .9995 Platinum American Eagle, first time ever and enhanced reverse proof coin
  • 1/2 ounce, .9995 Platinum American Eagle "regular" proof coin
  • A guarantee that only 30,000 sets will be sold
  • A very elegant hardwood box that can attractively display or hold the coins
The set includes an enhanced reverse proof coin. What is that?

You can read the long description of what a proof coin is, or quicker, heres what the Mint says about this set:
The proof coin features a cameo image floating on a mirror-like background. The enhanced reverse proof coin features a frosted background and a brilliant, mirror-like finish on the raised elements of the coin. This is an enhanced reverse proof version because it is not an exact opposite polish of the regular proof version. The design elements on the enhanced reverse proof platinum coin were strategically selected to feature the proof, mirror-like finish in contrast to frosted background design elements to enhance the entire image.

Breaking down the price of the 10th Anniversary American Eagle Platinum Set

The Mint has the "normal" one-half ounce American Eagle Platinum Proof coins priced at $880.95. Given that the anniversary platinum set includes one of the normal proofs, doing some simple calculation reveals the enhanced reverse proof coin would cost ~$1069, if it were to be sold by itself.
Currently, the London Fix price for an ounce of platinum is hovering in the $1420 range, making a 1/2 ounce about $710. Using napkin math, the price of the anniversary coins above the current spot price are:
  • ~$170.95, for the normal proof coin
  • ~$359, for the enhanced reverse proof coin
Is $1949.95 for the anniversary set too pricey?
Not when you consider, for example, other percentage mark-ups like modern silver proof coins. Try some napkin math on those.
The 10th Anniversary American Eagle set is a very attractive offer IF you have that type of money to spend.
Buying and ordering information for the set:

Ordering American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Set details:
  • They begin on December 13 at 12 noon (ET)
  • There are orders limited of one set per household for at least the first seven days

The Mint press release has more details regarding each coin. Currently, there is no image available for the enhanced reverse proof eagle.

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I've been struggling with this one, but I believe I will succumb to purchasing the set with the plan to dump the proof w/box and grade the "enhanced" reverse proof. The RP just might be the US Mints finest modern work yet.
I'm not a fan of grading modern mint coins but I want the 10th anniversary PCGS holder on this one. (for the long haul)

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I'm skipping it.
I think 2 grand worth of silver bullion will fare better over any given time-frame I can think of....

RossL 12-11-2007 12:59 PM

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I'm skipping this one also.

The mint hasn't sold 30000 of any platinum coin since the 90's.

The premium is outrageous.

It may not sell out.

In the past I have purchased PCGS PR69 graded platinum proof coins on ebay for less than what the mint is selling them for.

I'm afraid that the only people who may make money on this will be the few who luck into getting a PR70 grade.

I was wondering about that, thanks for posting.
The mint screwed up.

If they're looking for 30,000,000
they'd be better off charging $5000 per set with a limited 6000 run.

It's clear they are trying to make money on advance numistic value.
:confused_ma: Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

i got my postcard in the mail today too.

i'm torn with this one.

i think its a nice set but i think its about $500 overpriced.
but will 2.5 oz of gold outperform this set....

not sure what to do.....do you make sure you call in first in case it sells out or do you think the one-per-household will make it tough to sell out considering nobody can buy thousands of sets to control the market and then pick them up in the aftermarket for less....

not sure what is right.

If it sells way under the mint level then its a good buy. If it sells not, then probably not.

I would never pay that for the set to keep it, but might for a quick flip. $150 for my time to ship it out might be worth it. Buying sets for $2100, see link.

(by the way, how do you change a link from that long jumble to just say "link" where you can click it?)

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I'm sort of stuck on this one also.

On the one hand, you are paying almost $500 premium.

On the second hand, it is a unique set. If it sells out in one day, these sets will be sought after in the post retail market.

And on the third hand (my wife loves that hand), if they don't sell in seven days or more, they may just look at it as a one hit wonder and not produce anymore after this year. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING. 'cause, they'll be quite rare.

As for collecting platinum, I've only a 1/10th ozt. PCGS PR70 that I paid about $86 for a few years back. Its almost double that just in bullion now.

So it's a toss up, Platinum 10th anniversary set or Maybe a Liberty or St.Gaudens/Indian Gold set ($20, $10, $5, $2-1/2). I prefer the Liberty, but that's just my leaning.

Maranatha,

I have never dealt with JMRC, but I would be careful of this offer. The mint's one set per household offer expires after one week. After that, dealers can buy as many sets as they want for the $1949 price.

I may be just a skeptic, but that offer of $2100 may vanish. :shocked_ma:

Woke up this morning with the feeling this is not a great buy.
Gold is going in the right direction to add a little. Think I'll take the 2G's and add 2 1/2 ounces of gold eagles into the pile. Enjoy the anniversary platts!

Mike C 12-13-2007 09:38 AM

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I can't say I have ever dealt with them as well, so I can't vouch for them, but seems like they do that offer on a regular basis with the replies from the other members.

Either way, I don't have the cash to pick the set up. Wish I had the cash flow some of you guys have:)

Glad I didn't take the anniversary plat plunge!
The markets are going to offer us another gold buy soon.
My 2 G's are standing by.

If they take the buy limit off after 1 week, that offer will vanish.
The RP might be awesome, you might want to keep it and send it to PCGS?

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I just checked at the mint web site. They are still taking orders, so it didn't sell out.

I think silver is a better buy right now. But if you likes the gold.

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

I bought enough silver at low prices that I'll just hold. I'll be in the market for more when the global economy slows down enough to curtail copper mining, which is where a great amount of silver's supply is coming from. By that time, the financial crisis will be unmanagable and with a lower silver supply.
Does this make sense?
Gold during a financial crisis!

Anybody buying this, now that the spread has decreased significantly? I bought the platinum proof one ounce when the price was $1740. I will not be buying this special one myself.

I bought this set the first day it came out and sold it to a dealer for a $150 profit the same day.

Struggling with this lately. A lot to tie up in a 2 coin set, but it's pretty close to spot. Won't get a first strike designation but I think that whole concept is pretty stupid anyway. I'll probably pull the trigger.

the mintage limit wouldn't have been reached anyway...they always put high limits on their regular issues.

I don't see anything special about the buffalo besides the red case. Seems to be the same as the 06, 07.

Re: 10th anniv platinum sets

Looks like a bullion coin, too, not a proof. Some chinese charectars on the paperwork. I think too expensive unless/until the spot price moves a lot closer, if even then. I'll probably buy the proof if i have any money...

Looks like the mint is hoping to sell a bunch of these to the Chinese at inflated prices.

What ticks me off is that they won't even be honest and say whether it's proof or uncirculated. You have to figure it out for yourself. For that price, I'll buy the Platinum Anniversary Set. Better deal.
